I have the privilege of working for an amazing educational project called PLANE, Pathways for Learning Anywhere, anytime – A Network for Educators, and in this last few days we have held our first Festival of Learning and it was incredible. All the talent, expertise, passion and knowledge that educators out there have to share is beyond what I could imagine and it is so inspirational to be among such leaders in education and technology. Below are two of the amazing summaries of talks done by Amanda Hogan @hogesonline. Unofficially, Amanda did a fantastic job of capturing some of the fantastic talks given so thanks Amanda.
I found both of Dan Haesler’s talk rather confronting personally. The statistics are frightening really when it comes to teacher wellbeing and retention within classroom teaching jobs. Dan enlightened us to the real statistics that 40-50% of teachers leave before teaching for 5 years and that education has the highest incidence of mental health disorders. It’s quite sobering really. I started classroom teaching at the age of 21 and as a young teacher I was sent to a school that was very tough and many circumstances and incidents led to me seeking employment elsewhere, however, my love and passion for education has never died and it is where my career still remains. It is sad though that I became a stat like so many others. Dan Haesler has a lot to say about the mental health of teachers and of our students and I will certainly be following his work more.
Another fantastic presenter that I saw twice at the festival was Dr Jason Fox and he was brilliant!! Such an engaging speaker, who as someone who doesn’t consider himself a motivational speaker is ironically very motivating in his presence on stage and what he gets his audience to think about.
You need 45 DAYS with @drjasonfox to truly appreciate what his philosophy could bring to ur school… 45mins not enough #encore! #FOL12
